Why am I receiving the following error:

This server requires security features that your Android device does not support.”

Exchange 2007 & 2010

This FAQ is directed to an IT Exchange Admin familiar with modifying the Exchange Activesync policy(s) that apply to customer mailbox(s).

  1. Open Exchange Management Console, go to Organization Configuration, then Client Access.
  2. Modify the Exchange Activesynch policy that is applicable to end users with a Motorola XOOM.  If using the default or only a single EAS policy, consider creating a new policy that will be linked to end user mailboxes who are synching with a Motorola XOOM.  Once you decide on an EAS policy, you then have two options regarding policy settings:
    • If “Allow non-provisionable devices” is unchecked, then check this setting.  Supported policy settings will still flow to the Motorola XOOM, but the error message from this FAQ should resolve (may need to reset the Motorola XOOM to clear account set-up cache).
    • If IT Security policies prevent the checking of the setting above, then please note the list of EAS settings (at time of this writing) below that have been known to produce the error message in this FAQ (no support yet for the settings below):
      1. Password Recovery (keep unchecked).
      2. Simple Password (Keep this setting checked.  A security workaround is another policy setting: Require alphanumeric password, using at least one complex character is supported and will prevent a simple password).
      3. Include past calendar items (leave at default=All).
      4. Include past e-mail items (leave at default=All).
      5. Limit message size to (KB) (keep unchecked).
      6. Allow synchronization when roaming (keep unchecked).
      7. Maximum attachment size (KB) (keep unchecked).
      8. Require encryption on the storage card (keep unchecked).
      9. Allow removable storage (keep checked).
      10. Allow camera (keep checked).
      11. Allow Wi-Fi (keep checked).
      12. Allow infrared (keep checked).
      13. Allow Internet sharing from the device (keep checked).
      14. Allow Bluetooth (leave at default=Allow).
      15. Allow browser (keep checked).
      16. Allow consumer mail (keep checked).
      17. Allow unsigned applications (keep checked).
      18. Allow unisgned installation packages (keep checked).
    • Confirm that the above policy settings are set to their default settings (see values above in parenthesis).
    • Please note that support for the features above are being considered in a future maintenance release.
  3. Confirm that the existing or new EAS policy is applied to mailboxes synching with a Motorola XOOM.  In Exchange Management Console, go to Recipient Configuration and right-click a mailbox(s), get properties, check the Mailbox Features tab, select Exchange ActiveSynch, click on Properties and confirm the Exchange Activesynch mailbox policy applied to the mailbox (update if necessary).
  4. At this point you should be able to set-up the Exchange mailbox account on the Motorola XOOM.
  5. Please note that the end user must accept the security policies on the Motorola XOOM for the mailbox account to set-up correctly.  If the end user attempts to by-pass a required policy, then e-mail for the account will not synch to the Motorola XOOM and the end user will continue to be prompted to set-up the required security policy (i.e. selecting and confirming a PIN).
