Taking photos with the moto x4

To open the camera, do any of the following:

  • Touch Image
  • Twist your phone twice from any screen.
  • From the lock screen, swipe Image left.

To take a photo

  1. If needed, adjust settings.
  2. Frame your subject:
     
    • To zoom, drag the viewfinder up or down.
    • To set focus location, touch the viewfinder then drag the focus ring.
    • To change the exposure, touch the viewfinder then slide Image to the desired exposure.
  3. To take the photo, do one of the following:
     
    • Touch Image
    • Touch & hold Image to take a rapid series of photos.
    • Touch Image for a timer.

      Tip: To touch anywhere on the screen instead of using Image, touch Image >  Settings and turn on Tap anywhere to capture.
  4. To review your photos and videos, touch thumbnail at bottom right. Then:
     
    • To view all thumbnails, touch the screen, then touch Image to open the Photos app.
    • To view photos later, open the Photos app or other photo app you installed.

Take a selfie

  1. On the viewfinder, switch to the front camera:
    • Touch Image
    • Or, twist your phone twice.

  2. If needed:
    • Adjust the beauty filter or mirroring.
  3. To take the photo, do one of the following:
    • Touch Image 
    • Touch Image  for a timer.

To take a panoramic photo

  1. On the viewfinder, touch Image > Panorama
  2. Frame one side of the scene.
  3. Touch Image, then slowly pan horizontally or vertically across the scene. Keep your motion smooth and use a steady speed.
  4. When you reach the end of your scene, touch Image

View panoramas

In the Photos app, you'll see Image on thumbnails of images when you can use immersive view.

  1. Touch the thumbnail to open the Image photo.
  2. Do any of the following:
    • To move the photo around with your finger, touch Image
    • To experience the scene as if it were surrounding you, touch Image and move your phone around you.

To share your photospheres with others, download the Google Photo Sphere or the Facebook 360 apps.


To take photo with blurred background

Use Portrait mode to keep the subject of your photo in focus and blur the surrounding scene as little or much as you like.

  1. On the viewfinder, touch Image > Portrait
  2. For best results, stay within 1.5 meters (5 feet) of your subject. It's best if there are no objects between you and your subject.
  3. Move the focus ring to your subject.
  4. Use the slider to increase or decrease blur surrounding the subject.

  5. Touch Image

    Image on the photo or its thumbnail means the background can be edited post-capture.
  6. If desired, edit the photo to increase or decrease blur or remove color from the background.

Take photo with replaceable background

Cut out your subject and add a new background

  1. On the viewfinder, touch Image  > Cutout
  2. Frame your subject and hold the phone steady.
  3. Touch Image  to take the photo.
    Image on the photo or its thumbnail means the background is replaceable.
  4. Edit the photo to replace the background.

To take spot color photos

You can take a black and white photo with spot color.

  1. On the viewfinder, touch Image > Spot color
  2. Touch the item or area where you want to retain color.
  3. Use the slider to adjust color intensity.
  4. Touch Image

Adjust ISO and exposure

To refine settings before taking a photo:

  1. On the viewfinder, touch Image > Manual
  2. Do one of the following:
    • To adjust an individual setting, touch its icon.
    • To adjust all settings, touch Image and drag an icon to adjust its setting.
    • Manual focus
    • White balance
    • Shutter speed
    • ISO, the camera's sensitivity to light.
    • Exposure
  3. Do any of the following:
    • To return to default settings, touch Image
    • To close settings, touch Image
    • To exit Manual mode, touch Image > Auto

Troubleshooting tips

  • To enable all features and get optimized performance, visit the Play Store to ensure you are running the latest version of Motorola Camera.
  • Third-party cases can interfere with the camera. Try removing the case if you have image-quality issues with photos.
  • Please make sure there is not a protective covering over the camera lens.
  • Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Take a dry cloth and gently clean the camera lens.
  • Make sure your finger is not covering or shading the camera lens while taking the photo or video.
