Reset the moto z

How do I reset my moto z?

In the unlikely event that your device becomes unresponsive, frozen, blank or black screen, or will not respond to the power button, you can perform a force restart on the device by following the steps below.

Press and hold the Power button for 10 - 20 seconds, the device will restart and go through the boot-up sequence.

Note: The forced restart or reboot will not delete any data on your phone.

Factory Data Reset is a tool used to remove everything that was imported, added or installed on the device. Keep in mind, when using this feature everything is deleted.

To reset the device:

  1. Go to Settings > Backup & reset
  2. Touch Factory Data Reset
  3. Touch Reset Phone

Tip: After power up we recommend you do NOT enter a Gmail account. This will ensure applications are not automatically downloaded. (Note: You will be able to enter your Gmail account later and reinstall your applications).

External Reset

If you are unable to access the phone's menu to perform the standard reset you can attempt an external factory reset.

Warning: Before proceeding with an External Reset ensure you know your Gmail address and password. If you don’t know the Gmail address and password, visit www.gmail.com > “Need help?”.

Once you have reset your password, power up the locked phone in an area with Wi-Fi or data service, and enter the new password.

When using this feature; everything is deleted from the device.

Reset will require a minimum battery level of 25%. If you are unable to perform a reset, please charge for 20-30 minutes and try reset again.

  1. Make sure your battery is charged at least 30%.
  2. Turn off the phone.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time until the phone turns on.
  4. Press the Volume Down button until you see Recovery mode.
  5. Press the Power button to restart in Recovery mode.
  6. If you see an Android robot with a red exclamation mark, press and hold the Power button, then press and release the Volume Up button to display the menu options.
  7. Use the Volume buttons to scroll to Wipe data/factory reset, then press the Power button to select it.
  8. Use Volume buttons to scroll to an option and press the Power button to select it:
    • Userdata only: preserves personalized content shipped with your phone, including power up message, image, wallpaper, and ringtones
    • Userdata + personalized content: deletes all content and data
  9. Allow several seconds for the reset to complete.

Use Volume buttons to scroll to Reboot system now, then press the Power button to select it.

Allow several minutes for the reboot to complete. If the phone doesn't finish rebooting, press & hold the Power button until the screen turns dark, then release it to power up normally.
  10. If you reset your phone because you suspect a third-party app is causing problems, when you set up the phone again, on the Get your apps & data screen, touch Image under Restore from backup and select Set up as new device. Then, restore one app at a time and use the phone for a while. If the phone has no issues, install the next app and retest.
