Maximize Device Storage - Android 4.4 (Kit Kat)

Many Motorola Android devices offer two different storage areas: internal phone storage and external storage. The external storage is more commonly known as an SD Card or Memory Card.

Different types of data are stored in each of these locations. The device's internal storage typically holds MMS and SMS messages, browser bookmarks, downloaded applications from the Play Store, device settings, and media.  An SD Card holds only media, such as pictures, music, and videos.  To free up memory in either of these locations, we recommend that you backup the data on the device and then delete unnecessary data.

Uninstall unwanted or unnecessary applications that have been downloaded from the Play Store in order to free up memory. You cannot uninstall applications that are preinstalled on the device.

  1. TouchImage
  2. Swipe to APPS
  3. Select settings
  4. Scroll down and select Apps. (The amount of memory an application uses is listed under its name. Take note of these values when choosing what to uninstall and how much memory you need to free.)
  5. Select the application to uninstall.
  6. On the application's information screen, select Uninstall.
  7. Repeat this process with additional applications until you have freed the desired amount of memory from the device.

Note: You will be able to return to the Play Store at any time to reinstall a purchased application that you removed, as long as the device has enough memory available to store it. From the Play Store, select ImageMy apps to access previously purchased applications.

If you only need to free a small amount of memory, clear the temporary memory (cache) that an application uses instead of uninstalling the application.

  1. TouchImage
  2. Swipe to APPS
  3. Select settings
  4. Scroll down and select Apps.
  5. Select the application whose cache and/or data you want to delete.
  6. On the application's information screen, select Clear cache.

We also recommend that you clear all browser data regularly to help free up space.

Note: Clearing browser data will remove saved logins, passwords, and other information stored in web pages.

  1. Open the Browser > press Menu.
  2. Select More > Settings.
  3. Scroll down and select Clear cache, Clear history, and/or Clear all cookie data.

We recommend that you delete unnecessary files from downloaded data.  Often files are downloaded while browsing or using various applications.

  1. TouchImage
  2. Touch Downloads
  3. Review files you need. Delete any files that are unnecessary and choose other files that can be moved to your PC. Send these files via MMS, email, or copy them to a device via USB.

Free up memory on the SD Card

You'll need to delete files from the SD Card to free up memory. You can back up these files to a computer before deleting them by connecting the device to a computer as a USB storage device

Transfer the SD Card files to a computer to preserve them, then delete these backed up files and/or other files you do not want from the SD Card. When finished, disable the device as a USB storage device by selecting None from the device's notification bar.
