How do I reset the moto e4?

There are several ways to reset the device:

  • A forced restart, which may resolve an unresponsive or blank display and does not remove any saved information
  • A factory data reset, which uses menus to reset and remove any saved information
  • An external factory data reset, which uses hardware keys to reset and remove any saved information

Forced Restart

If the device is unresponsive or frozen, displays a blank or black screen, or will not respond when the power button is pressed, perform a forced restart.

Press and hold the Power and Volume Up buttons for 10-20 seconds. The device will restart and go through the boot-up sequence.

Note: The forced restart does not delete any data stored on the phone.

Factory Data Reset

Reset the phone

The last option is to factory reset the device.

Notes:
  • Reset will require a minimum battery level of 20%.
  • This will reset the device to the factory default state and it will clear out the memory buffers and reset the device and application data.
  • Ensure any personal data is backed up.
To reset the device:
  1. Go to Settings Backup & reset
Note: Please unselect the Automatic restore option.

  2. Touch Factory Data Reset

  3. Touch Reset Phone
Tip: After power up we recommend to NOT enter a Gmail account to ensure applications are not automatically downloaded. (You will be able to enter your Gmail account later and reinstall your applications).

External Reset

If you are unable to access the phone's menu to perform the standard reset you can attempt an external factory reset.

Warning: Before proceeding with an External Reset ensure you know your Gmail address and password. If you don’t know the Gmail address and password, visit www.gmail.com > “Need help?”.

Once you have reset your password, power up the locked phone in an area with Wi-Fi or data service, and enter the new password.

  • When using this feature; everything is deleted from the device.
  • Reset will require a minimum battery level of 25%. If you are unable to perform a reset, please charge for 20-30 minutes and try reset again.

How to perform an external reset:

  1. With the phone powered off, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time until the device turns on.

  2. Press the Volume Down key to highlight Recovery mode.

  3. Press the Power key to restart into Recovery mode.

  4. If you see an Android robot with a red exclamation mark, press and hold the Power button, then press and release the Volume Up button to display the menu options.

  5. Use the volume keys to scroll to Wipe data/factory reset and press the Power key to select it.

  6. Use Volume buttons to scroll to Reboot system now, then press the Power button to select it.

Allow several minutes for the reboot to complete. If the phone doesn't finish rebooting, press & hold the Power button until the screen turns dark, then release it to power up normally.

  7. If you reset your phone because you suspect a third-party app is causing problems, when you set up the phone again, on the Get your apps & data screen, touch  under Restore from backup and select Set up as new device. Restore one app at a time and use the phone for a while. If the phone has no issues, install the next app and retest.
