How do I create a csv file to import / export contacts?

A CSV, or Comma Separated Values, file is created by exporting contacts from your email system.

After you have created a CSV file you will be able to upload your contacts to Gmail which is used to sync with your device.

Contacts created on the handset will be saved to the handset as "Google" contacts and will sync with your Gmail account automatically unless contact settings for Gmail are changed.

Below you will find some of the most common email applications where you currently keep your contacts. Follow the instructions below to create a CSV file from your email provider, then scroll to bottom  for CSV import instructions into Gmail to sync those contacts with your handset's Phonebook.


  1. From the left hand menu, select "Contact list"
  2. Select "Export" under the Manage menu
  3. Click on "Export"
  4. Follow the browser instructions for downloading the file
  5. Remember the location where you saved the CSV file

Outlook 2003/2007/2010

  1. From the Outlook main menu, select File => Import and Export
  2. Highlight "Export to a file", then click "Next"
  3. Select "Comma Separated Values (Windows)", then click "Next"
  4. Highlight the "Contacts" folder, then click "Next"
  5. Select "Browse" and specify a location and file name for the exported contacts
  6. Click "Next
  7. Click "Finish" and your contacts will be exported
  8. Remember the location where you saved the CSV file


  1. Click on "Options" and select "Mail Options" in the upper left-hand corner
  2. Click on "Contacts" in the left hand menu
  3. Select "Import/Export" under "Management"
  4. Scroll down to the "Export" section
  5. Click the "Export Now" button next to Microsoft Outlook
  6. Follow the browser instructions for downloading the file
  7. Remember the location where you saved the CSV file

Outlook Express

  1. From the Outlook Express main menu, select File => Export => Address Book
  2. Select "Text File (Comma Separated Values)"
  3. Click on "Export"
  4. Specify a file name and select a location on your computer to save the file
  5. Click "Next"
  6. Select the fields you want to include for each contact
  7. Click "Finish" and your contacts will be exported
  8. Remember the location where you saved the CSV File



  1. Launch the Thunderbird Address Book
  2. Select the Address Book you wish to export in the left-hand column
  3. Go to Tools -> Export
  4. Type in a name for the address book you are going to export
  5. Select a location on the hard drive, such as the Desktop, that will make it easy to find the exported file
  6. Make sure you change the "Save As Type" from .ldif to .csv and click Save
  7. Remember the location where you saved the CSV file

Copy contacts from your Windows Mobile Phone to Microsoft Outlook using Windows Mobile Tools:

In order to use the methods below you will need either Active Sync (Windows 2000, XP) or Windows Mobile Device Center (Microsoft Vista). These programs provide users of Microsoft Windows a way to transport documents, calendars, contact lists and email between their desktop computer and a mobile device. CLICK HERE to download.

  1. Connect your phone to the PC via the USB cable
  2. Once your phone is connected a window will appear. Click Next to continue
  3. Select Contacts and click Next
  4. You will be prompted with the option of Allowing Wireless Connections. Click Next after you have made your selection.
  5. Active Sync will save the settings, and begin to synchronize
  6. Once synchronization is complete your phone contacts will now be synchronized between your phone and Outlook

Regardless of the method you choose above, once your contacts are in CSV format follow the steps below:

Import Contacts into Google Gmail:

  1. Log into Gmail on your Computer 
  2. Click GMAIL on the Left hand side of your screen
  3. Click Contacts - the contacts list now opens 
  4. Click More
  5. Click Import
  6. Click Choose File, and then navigate to the .csv file that you created with any of the above methods
  7. Select the file, and then click Import
  8. After your contacts are imported, a dialog box appears and displays the total number of contacts imported.
  9. Handset will sync Gmail contacts  to phone according to sync schedule set up in your Google account.
  10. Contacts entered on the handset as Google contacts are then sync'd back into same Gmail account when accessed by a computer.
